IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: Louis Melcher, Sublimity OR

PHOTO ACQUIRED: Aug 2025, Albany Antique Mall, Albany Oregon

All I have been able to learn about Louis so far is that he died at age 20, in 1891, of Typhoid Fever. He appears to be around that age in the photo, so it is reasonable to assume the photo was taken in 1891 or thereabouts.

He lived in Sublimity Oregon, a community southeast of Salem Oregon. He father was also named Louis Melcher.

I am not sure if "Schooley" is a maiden name or middle name. So far, I am finding nothing on this woman.

SIEGFRIED, H. W. (Birdsboro, PA)

The inscription on reverse says "Mr. H. W. Siegfried, Burtsborrow, Berks Co., PA"

I suspect the location may have more accurately been Birdsboro, PA, a southeast suburb of Reading.

The photographer, Alfred Harmany, operated a studio in Lancaster from 1863-1875, at which point he sold the business to F W Willig. So the photo can certainly be dated to between those years. Fashion makes me think around 1870.

With only initials to work with, I cannot be certain which of several H. Siegfrieds in the area this was.

A common surname makes this difficult to research without a location clue. With luck, someone may recognize this handsome young man and claim him.
